         <head>Biographical Note</head>
         <p>David George Sherman was born in 1947 and graduated from Amherst College in 1969.  He received his M.A. and Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1974 and 1982 respectively. He taught anthropology at Southern Illinois University, 1984-1986, Dartmouth College, 1988-1989 and University of California Irvine, 1989-1990. He was teaching at Keene State College (N.H.) at the time he was killed in an automobile accident in 1992.</p>

         <head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
         <p>The collection contains Sherman's notes from his coursework and studies at Amherst College and Cornell University; field notes for and drafts of his book Rice, Rupees and Ritual: Economy and Society Among the Samosir Batak of Sumatra (1990); the text of published articles and public lectures; and extensive background and lecture notes related to the anthropology courses he taught.</p>
