These papers were all within black spring binders, most with titles on spine. The
papers have been removed from the binders and placed in folders; order remains the
same as in the original binder.
No accession number. Possibly gift of Professor I. Bernard Cohen;
received: probably after 1956.
This collection appears to be "leftover"
materials that interrelate to the other Sarton collections already cataloged at Houghton.
Collection was not preliminarily processed until July of 2008.
There is a restriction that applies to a portion of these papers (item (22)
below). Harvard student grades are restricted for 80 years from date of creation.
This collection is not housed at the Houghton Library but is shelved offsite at the
Harvard Depository. Retrieval requires advance notice. Readers should check with
Houghton Public Services staff to determine what material is offsite and retrieval
policies and times.

Sarton was an historian of science and professor at Harvard University. He
founded and edited Isis, an international review devoted to the history and philosophy
of science; studied Arabic and Islam in the Middle East; and lectured at many
universities in the U.S. and Europe. Sarton was born in Belgium and emigrated to the
U.S. in 1915.
Arranged alphabetically by title.
Includes: autograph manuscript lecture notes for history of science courses taught
at Harvard College and Radcliffe; autograph manuscripts for Sarton's bibliography and
biography; miscellaneous autograph manuscript notes; printed materials and
documents relating to the journal ISIS and printed materials on the Académie
internationale d'histoire des sciences; printed materials by or about Sarton; manuscripts
